What make a house a home?

In recent months, we have moved from our comfortable, spacious house with all the mod cons – instantaneous heating/cooling, ensuite, 2 toilets etc. to our 47-year-old new (to us) home.
We lived in our old house for just over 10 years, we designed and built it the way we wanted, filled it with our things and it became our home. We have lived in our new house now for 3 months, we didn’t design it, we didn’t build it, it has no mod cons, only basic heating/cooling , 1 bathroom and 1 toilet…yikes and it is OLD. We have only made minor changes like new carpets and curtains, décor additions, but, it already feels like home, our home.
This got me thinking…. What makes a house a home? Is it physical, ie. the house itself/ what it has to offer / what is in the house? Is it a feeling? A combination of both? Or something entirely different?
For me it begins with a feeling. Our new house does not compare to our old house, in terms of the house itself. It’s small, has no luxuries and like I said, its old and its run down, but I love it and I feel a comfortableness (is that even a word?) here that is hard to describe. When I walked into the house for the first time, an almost immediate ‘homely’ feeling come over me. I knew that this house was going to be our home. Our whole family, even our kids, who were so reluctant to move from the only home they have known, feel at home in this house.
Our new house does have a lot to offer also, there in lay the physical aspect that makes our house our home. We now have a bit of land, and we love its location. However, I think these are secondary to how this house makes me feel.
We plan to renovate or rebuild and include the luxuries that we currently do not have, especially that second bathroom and toilet.. However, a little bit of me does wonder if that comfortableness and homely feeling I have in this house right now will carry on into the new house. I definitely hope so.

What do you think makes a house a home?
